One Direction songs you might not know Liam Payne wrote – as fans grieve the band’s ‘underrated’ lyricist and ‘vocal pillar’ following his death

One Direction fans are grieving Liam Payne as one of the band’s ‘vocal pillars’ and ‘underrated songwriters’.

The 31-year-old, who died after falling from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been praised by both his followers and ex-bandmates alike as an ‘incredible’ lyricist who helped pen some of the group’s ‘best songs’.

As reported by Capital UK, he co-wrote 34 of 1D’s hits, including several writing credits on Midnight Memories – often touted as one of the boys’ most successful albums – often along with Louis Tomlinson.

It includes working on the likes of Diana, Little White Lies, Through the Dark and Does He Know?

In a heartfelt statement, Zayn Malik also described Liam as ‘the most qualified’ musician in One Direction.

Taking to Instagram, the singer penned: ‘I knew nothing in comparison, I was a novice child with no experience and you were already a professional.

‘I was always happy to know, no matter what happened on stage we could always rely on you to know which way to steer the ship next.’

In another moving message, his former bandmate Louis called Liam ‘an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody’.

‘We often spoke of getting back in the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band,’ he said in a post.

‘And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam.’

Shortly after parting ways with One Direction, Liam had even considered focusing on songwriting.

‘To be honest with you, I wasn’t going to do a solo venture,’ he told Billboard.

‘I was just going to go into songwriting and carry on and do that. But then I was like, “You’ve been trying to do this since you were 14 years old. You would be ridiculously stupid to turn down the option to have a deal.”

‘Coming out of the band, we had some pretty good opportunities around us. I had to do something.’

Both Liam and Louis appear to have nurtured a song writing chemistry that lasted beyond their youths in the band.

Louis had recently also said that he had the ‘urge; to write ‘with or for’ Liam, adding: ‘Because we’ve spent a lot of time working together and most of the songs I wrote in the band I wrote with Liam and we built up a really good partnership.

‘I would be interested to see what that looks like for his stuff… Maybe he wouldn’t have me, I don’t know!

‘If I imagine what kind of song I’d like to write with Liam I’d like to write something quite emotive and honest.’

Elsewhere last year, Liam revealed that he had played his latest album for Louis.

Fans have also been reflecting on the late musician’s lyrics in the wake of his death.

A tear-jerking song from an unconfirmed source has emerged on social media claiming to be a 2019 unreleased tune from the singer.

A singer – rumoured to be Liam – eerily croons the tragic lyrics: ‘I am a little less high than I used to be.

‘Still a little uncertain of everything. I keep hearing I am right where I am supposed to be, so trying to find out what that’s supposed to mean.

A preliminary report into the popstar’s death said ‘everything indicates’ Liam was alone when he died.

Prosecutors have taken five statements from witnesses including from two women who were with Payne the night before he died.

Police had been searching for the duo having identified them as ‘key witnesses’ before the One Direction star’s hotel balcony fall.

The pair had been in Liam’s hotel room but left prior to his death.

The singer died instantly after suffering multiple injuries that led to ‘internal and external haemorrhaging’.

Both women are said to have left the hotel yesterday after waiting for the star in the lobby, Argentine outlet Infobae reports.

There is no indication that the women could be involved in his death, but police hope they can help piece together Payne’s final moments before he plunged to his death at around 5pm local time.
