The five accessories that are making you look old and dated this spring – and we bet you’re wearing at least one. Stylist SARAH BELL reveals what you should choose instead

Curved toe heels, chunky necklaces and oversized sunglasses are among the top fashion pieces making you look older than you are.

Long gone are the days of getting away with wearing vintage jewellery, skinny jeans or extravagant florals. While you may think these styles are timeless, unfortunately it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Confused? Don’t fret – there’s hope. Stylist Sarah Bell reveals the simple changes you can make today to update your wardrobe – and avoid an embarrassing faux pas.

‘When it comes to styles that can make you look older, fashion staples associated with particular eras, especially when wore in excess, are the worst offenders,’ Sarah tells me.

‘While incorporating vintage pieces here and there along with modern elements can work, an entire ensemble from these eras will give you a more aged appearance.’

She highlights how it’s essential to have a wardrobe that complements not only your age, but also your personality, lifestyle, body shape and colour palette.

‘Once you have that foundation, you can selectively and safely introduce vintage elements into your look. That said, I firmly believe that wearing garments and accessories with confidence can make almost any style work with the right mix.’

Curved toe heels

When it comes to choosing shoes, Sarah recommends avoiding smaller heels with ‘full toe coverage’ at all costs because this style can make your feet and legs ‘appear wider’.

‘While they can create a glam, classic look when styled correctly, they are often associated with an older age bracket,’ she says.

Instead opt for slingback heels that show some of the foot and feature a small strap for support.

‘These offer a lengthening effect and are versatile for all seasons and age ranges.’

Frumpy floral dresses

Outdated floral dresses for spring can add years to your look, with many considering them old-fashioned.

Sarah says modern cuts and subtle patterns generally offer a more youthful and stylish appeal.

‘A versatile option would be a midi-length dress with a waistline to define shape and a V-neck or lower scoop to elongate the body, providing a balanced and flattering summer look.’

Avoid: Outdated floral dresses for spring certainly aren't groundbreaking and can add years to your look, with many dubbing them 'old-fashioned'

Oversized sunglasses

While flashy, large sunglasses are usually practical, the style often appears dated and can make you look years older.

‘They often overshadow more sophisticated and timeless designs, giving a more exaggerated and theatrical effect,’ Sarah explains.

‘While they may seem trendy and attention-grabbing, their overpowering effect can detract from a youthful, sophisticated look.’

Instead, opt for sleek styles such as cat-eye sunglasses or classic basics that can enhance your look without compromising on elegance.

Lock shoulder bags

When it comes to choosing a bag, a ‘flap bag’ tends to be more versatile and trendy over alternative options.

One style to stay away from, however, is lock shoulder bags and purses.

‘The lock shoulder bag is a timeless accessory that continues to evolve, offering security with its centred lock latch and structured frame. However, it can sometimes give off an older vibe due to its classic design,’ Sarah tells me.

‘In contrast, the flap bag, available in various sizes and materials, provides a versatile and enduring style with its classic flap detail and adjustable strap options.’

While adding a necklace can enhance an outfit or balance your body shape, a thick chain necklace often feels more suited for older women due to its boldness
