GWS Giants player ‘sought permission’ to dress as a slave character from Quentin Tarantino’s movie Django Unchained from team-mates

A GWS star is reportedly facing a potential sanction from the AFL after he is alleged to have dressed as a slave character from Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 movie Django Unchained, during the Giants’ ‘Wacky Wednesday’ end-of-season function.

Connor Idun is reportedly one of up to eight players who are facing sanctions from the AFL following the Giant’s post-season party.

It emerged this week that multiple players were facing sanctions from the league following the fancy dress party at a private room in a pub. It is alleged that some players had dressed as the World Trade Centre of New York, while others had dressed as former NRL player Jarryd Hayne and Australian NBA star Josh Giddey.

Hayne was released from jail earlier this year after his conviction for rape was quashed on appeal and the charges against him were dropped. Giddey was cleared following a police investigation over claims he had a relationship with an underage girl.

It is also claimed that some players had performed some ‘unsavoury skits’ during the event, with one player alleged to have made a joke about disgraced American rap star Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

According to sources close to The Age, Idun had dressed as the character Django who is played by Jamie Foxx in the movie.

During the film, Django is a slave who is freed by a bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz, who is played by actor Christoph Watlz.

The outlet adds, that Idun and a team-mate had ‘re-enacted a wrestling scene’ from the movie during a skit. Sources added that the defender, who was born in London to an Australian mother and Ghanaian father, had sought permission to dress as the character from team-mates, Harry Rowston, Toby Bedford, Leek Aleer and Callum Brown.

It is understood that his team-mates had said they had no issue against Idun dressing as the character.

The club’s internal probe has cleared the players of any illegal activity and players are reportedly making submissions to the AFL today over their sanctions.

There is no accusation that any of the alleged behaviour was criminal.

Idun’s representatives have been contacted for comment.

It is understood that sanctions could be handed out on Thursday, with GWS issuing a statement earlier in the week claiming that some of the allegations were ‘distressing and entirely contrary to the club’s values and policies.’

The AFLPA has reportedly told The Age that it will not make comment until the investigation has been concluded.

GWS Giant’s captain Toby Greene is alleged to be one player facing a fine of around $20,000. Reports from journalist Mitch Cleary stated that the captain was ‘not directly involved in the skits’ but ‘is set to be given a heavy financial penalty for showing a lack of leadership’.

Greene’s agent, Paul Connors told SEN on Thursday that the GWS Captain understood he ‘could have done things better’.

‘Toby accepts that he’s the leader of the club and he needed to be better,’ Connors told SEN on Thursday morning.

‘But additionally, he had as much interest being on that Mad Monday as you would have done. He’d lost a game that he was up by 44 points.

‘He was emotionally drained and not in a state of thinking about anything.

‘So yes, Toby accepts that he could have done things better, but again, it’s others to debate whether $20,000 is too much.’

GWS released a statement earlier this week, writing: The Giants confirmed yesterday the club is aware of allegations of inappropriate behaviour at the players’ end-of-season event last month.

‘The club is taking the matter very seriously and acted swiftly upon the receipt of the concerns.

‘All parties have co-operated fully with the AFL to ensure the allegations are fully investigated,’ the statement read.

‘Some of the allegations are distressing and entirely contrary to the club’s values and policies.

‘There is also a level of misinformation and rumour being circulated which is entirely inappropriate, particularly while the investigation is ongoing.

‘The club will comment further once the outcomes of the investigation are finalised.’
