Hannah Waddingham reveals why she got into a row with Ted Lasso bosses while filming the comedy series

Hannah Waddingham has revealed how she got into a fight with Ted Lasso bosses while filming the comedy series.

The actress, 50, recalled how producers wanted her character Rebecca Welton to maintain her usual glam look even when waking up in bed with one of her players.

However, Hannah disagreed which resulted in an argument with both the makeup department and the show’s bosses as she battled to keep her character ‘approachable’ for fans.

She refused to wear makeup for the scene, insisting that it should look realistic to appear sexier and keep viewers from ‘switching off.’

Hannah said she first argued about it with her make-up artist, who wanted to put on discreet limited make-up, but then the issue ended up being fought with the show’s bosses.

The singer argued Rebecca would look sexier if she appeared like she’d had little sleep from a night with the young player than if her face appeared perfect.

Speaking on the Table for Two podcast, Hannah explained: ‘She won’t mind me saying it  but my hair and make-up artist on Ted Lasso, there’s a bit where I’m lying in bed with Toheeb’s character Sam Obisanya, and I was like ‘No, if they’re waking up together I don’t want any make-up on’.

‘The make-up artist said, “Well no, no, no, you need to, it needs to be like the ‘no make-up make-up”‘

‘And I was like, “No, I don’t, no, I don’t want any.” And it kind of went up to the powers that be. They were like “Hannah doesn’t want to wear any make-up.”

‘Because I want her to be approachable. I know everybody was rooting for Rebecca Welton and I take her very seriously.

‘I thought I just want everyone to see her pores and all, warts and all.

‘And that’s how I like every character, because your vulnerability is so close to your greatest strength.’

Hannah said that audiences would ‘switch off’ when they see a character wake up in bed still glammed out like the night before.

The actress added: ‘There’s something so much more sexy and hot about the fact that she’s clearly had a great night.’

Addressing season four rumours, Hannah said: ‘I don’t know. All I do know is that Welton has gone nowhere out of my heart.

‘I think there’s a possibility. Who knows? All I know is that writers’ room were a writers’ room of champions, magnificent writers, and it spoils you for all other work.

‘Because now, and I’m really glad about it actually, unless I receive a script that pushes and pulls me as much as Ted did – I mean you could be in one scene and almost with one sentence pull at people’s heart strings and then have them laughing, like smack them round the face with a gag.

‘And I’ve never known anything like it. The beauty of that writers’ room was it was full, jam-packed full of male feminists, and you can see it in the writing all over the place.

‘Myself and Juno as the main players in it, we never once felt dominated by all our menfolk. It was the most beautiful five years of my working life. Total and utter never-ending bliss.

Earlier this year Hannah called out a photographer on the Olivier Awards’ red carpet  after she was asked to ‘show a leg.’

Video shared by a fan on X captures the moment the Ted Lasso star was posing outside the Royal Albert Hall before a photographer apparently requested she ‘show leg.’

The photographer’s remarks are inaudible but Hannah is seen shouting over to the crowd of photographers: ‘Oh my God, you’d never say that to a man, my friend.’

As fans applaud her she then threatens to leave if the comments continue saying: ‘Don’t say “show me leg.” No.’

Walking away Hannah continued to argue with the snapper, pointing at him and adding ‘have some manners’.

Hannah hosted this year’s Olivier Awards, which celebrated another stellar year of UK theatre.

She wowed in a custom Marchesa gown, adorned with sparkling embellishments on the semi-sheer gown for her red carpet moment before making three outfit changes during the glittering ceremony.
