Mother makes horrifying discovery in formula bottle bought from Target

A young mother has shared her horror after she claims she found a maggot inside a bottle of formula from Target.

Rachel Ruddiman issued a warning over the Kendamil One Organic formula after spotting the insect larva inside her five-month-old Matilda’s bottle.

She explained her daughter had been suffering from an upset stomach ever since they began using the $39.99 formula, which was purchased online.

Kendamil has since determined the insect’s presence was the result of ‘inadvertent domestic contamination’, but Ruddiman says this is unlikely since she had just had her apartment deep-cleaned and used sterilized and sealed bottles.

The mom says she noticed Matilda struggling to drink last Friday. It was only when she removed the bottle she came to understand why.

Sickening photos show how Ruddiman discovered a maggot blocking the nipple of the bottle.

‘She had been gassy and vomiting that week since I’d started that new can but I didn’t really think too much of it until then when I was washing up the bottle,’ Ruddiman explained.

‘I saw this dead maggot coming out of the nipple and I was like, “That’s why you’re struggling to eat the formula”, because it was like the nipple was blocked with this maggot.’

The terrified mother immediately consulted an online group for moms and posted about her experience with the batch number, L24197KCA01.

She said she was then contacted by another parent who had bought the same batch of formula and whose ten-month-old son had experienced similar symptoms.

Ruddiman said her child’s upset stomach resolved almost immediately after she stopped using the Kendamil formula.

‘The next day she was on a different brand, and she was just so much happier,’ Ruddiman said. ‘So it’s actually a relief that I spotted it because I could have continued to use it and not noticed and had a little sick baby.’

Ruddiman explained that she sterilizes her baby’s bottles before placing them with the top sealed into her cupboard.

She also just moved into a new apartment that was thoroughly deep-cleaned, which she says supports the suspicion the formula was contaminated.

‘That batch needs to be off shelves,’ Ruddiman added. ‘They need to do a recall before a baby gets sick.

‘My baby’s five months old, and this other woman who said her baby was sick is ten months old, so they’re fairly sturdy by that age.

‘But the thought of like a newborn or a premature baby potentially drinking this batch, it could make like the baby seriously unwell.’

She reached out to Kendamil, who she said ‘could not get me off the phone quick enough’.

‘They didn’t ask for any of my contact details or anything,’ Ruddiman explained.

‘They just sort of said email pictures to this email address and like that was it. I’ve since had some back and forth they asked for the batch number, where it was bought from when I bought it, those types of details.

‘I’ve just been following up and like asking if there is any news. They said they will come back to me in 30 days, but 30 days isn’t good enough.’

Ruddiman is urging the manufacturer to pull the batch from the shelves.

‘I just want to a recall of that batch really, just to make sure there’s no other sick babies.

Kendamil said it has several protocols in place to prevent contamination and suggested the maggot was the result of 'domestic contamination'

‘I mean a bonus would be to get the cash back for that can, because I obviously didn’t continue to use it, and it’s not the like cheapest formula on the market because it’s known to be one of the better ones with higher quality standards.’

Ruddiman explained she bought the formula online as there is currently a shortage of British-made Kendamil in the US.

The manufacturer got in touch with Ruddiman on Thursday and stated an investigation indicated that the most likely cause was ‘inadvertent domestic contaminaton’.

It explained several processes and checks the formula goes through before hitting the shelves, which minimize the possibility of contamination.

But Ruddiman branded the findings, ‘frustrating’.

‘I know how clean my house is,’ she added. ‘And it was deep cleaned on 10/1 before I moved in, just ten days before I found the maggot.

‘It’s disappointing, I feel anything being fed to babies with a complaint should be taken seriously and that batch should be taken off shelves as a precautionary measure.’
